Industrial switchgear is normally used to control and protect medium voltage distribution systems associated with commercial (utility) sources as well as power derived from on-site generation facilities such as large diesel or turbine driven generators.
Batteries are used to trip, re-wind spring driven operators and close electrically operated circuit breakers and at the same time provide continuous control currents for monitoring and control circuits, to energize pilot lights and provide power for alarm circuits.
The mix of high current short-duration discharges and when they occur as well as the low current control loads over long periods determine the best selection of a battery type for any application. The Standby Power Optisize program factors all these parameters into its calculation of the batteries which meet the requirements of IEEE-1115. Mixed load battery sizing worksheet
